Pre-commercial process guidance / W01

Welding

Welding decisions start with the delivery's actual chemistry, geometry and an approved WPS — never a generic grade rule.

Decision inputs

Pre-commercial, indicative guidance. The final procedure and safety controls require competent review, order data and the actual material document.

  • 01

Use the actual chemical analysis from the delivery inspection document to evaluate and calculate CEV, CET and Pcm; no fixed CET or Pcm limit is assumed.

  • 02

    Combined thickness and joint geometry.

  • 03

Restraint, heat input and welding sequence.

  • 04

    Consumable hydrogen level and handling.

  • 05

Ambient and workpiece temperature and moisture condition.

02 / Decision tree

Decision sequence

  1. 01

    Verify identity and chemistry

Reconcile plate, heat and inspection document before assessing the procedure.

  2. 02

    Set thermal control

Assess preheat and interpass control against chemistry, combined thickness, restraint, heat input and current conditions.

  3. 03

    Prepare the joint

Use a clean, dry joint and low-hydrogen process with controlled consumable storage and handling.

  4. 04

    Work under competent supervision

Control heat input, bead sequence and temperature within the procedure.

03 / Inspection

Post-process inspection

  • 01

Inspect the joint, heat-affected zone and transitions to the WPS and ordered scope.

  • 02

Record temperatures, consumables and deviations in the work record.

04 / Hold point

Stop and escalation conditions

  • HOLDChemistry or material identity is missing.
  • HOLDRestraint exceeds the assessed procedure range.
  • HOLDThe surface is damaged, wet or contaminated.
  • HOLDThe work falls outside the qualified WPS range.
